Raphael "Ripperton" Gros, a true Swiss electronic music chameleon, has been enchanting audiences worldwide with his eclectic sound for over two decades.
Growing up immersed in the beats of Tony Humphries, Djaimin, and Kid Bachelor, Ripperton honed his craft working at Lausanne's legendary Tracks record shop.
His journey into DJing began in the early '90s, soon leading him to produce music on his MPC3000 and dusty analog synths.
His initial releases under the names Soul Merge and Reasons garnered recognition, with Reasons winning the Diesel U Music Award in 2003.
This accolade paved the way for his first label, Lovearth Records.
Ripperton's acclaim skyrocketed with his side project Lazy Fat People,
which caught the attention of labels like Border Community, Wagon Repair, and Carl Craig's Planet E. Concurrently, he collaborated with Swiss producers
like Quarion, Van Hai, Agnès, Chaton, Dachshund, Masaya, Crowdpleaser, and Quenum on labels such as Sthlm Audio and Plak Records.
His solo career flourished with releases on top underground labels including Innervisions, Maeve, Systematic, Rekids, Cocoon, Liebe Detail, and Connaisseur.
He also delivered over 130 remixes for artists like Laurent Garnier, Ellen Allien, Beanfield, and even Radiohead. Ripperton's versatility and talent earned him support from renowned DJs such as Steve Bug, Maya Jane Coles, Sasha, DJ Koze, James Holden, Joris Voorn, Deetron, and Radioslave, featuring him in their compilations over the years.
In 2006, Ripperton launched the esteemed underground label Perspectiv Records, followed by the beloved Tamed musiq in 2010. These labels spotlighted emerging talents from Switzerland and beyond, fostering collaborations with artists like DJ Nature, Tobias, Soulphiction, Sebo K, DJ Koze, Matt Karmil, Baikal, and Isolée. His debut album, "Niwa," arrived in 2010, followed by "A Little Part of Shade" in 2013, both released on Joris Voorn's Green Records. In 2018, Ripperton explored new sonic territories with modular and guitar sounds on the albums "Sight Seeing" and "Contrails," released on Los Angeles-based ESP Institute.
Ripperton's innovation and dedication were further recognized in 2022 when he received the prestigious Swiss Music Prize alongside the legendary duo Yello.
He also collaborated with photographer Matthieu Gafsou for the exhibition "Vivants" at the Museum of Art in Pully,
and presented an orchestral version of his electronic pieces for the prestigious tonhalleLATE – a collaboration with the Zurich Film Festival and the Filmphilharmonie.
Ripperton's career is a testament to his versatility, creativity, and dedication to electronic music.
Seamlessly blending genres and styles while constantly pushing boundaries, he stands as one of the most influential Swiss DJs and producers today.
Currently, he is collaborating with emerging Swiss talents, showcasing the vibrant and diverse electronic landscape of his homeland.
